The Right Tool for Any Job, Nonya’s Nonsense #10

Published by Trish Nonya on

Hello beautiful souls!!

I hope that you are having a fabulous day!

Today I want to talk about the one thing that has been a huge aspect of everything I’ve done and am currently doing. While many important aspects factor in, such as mindset, resourcefulness is something that should not be overlooked. Don’t worry if you don’t feel like you’re resourceful, this is a skill that can be learned and honed!

If you're having a hard time recognizing your gifts, look to someone else you know who's been resourceful. You may be surprised by how your own strengths rise to the surface by watching someone else.

Chris Gardner

I was hanging out with a good friend the other day who has been going through a hard time. She’s been in a difficult relationship since long before I knew her and I didn’t realize just how bad things were, but neither did she. She didn’t realize his behavior was abusive and she didn’t know to look for something like a women’s center in her area.

It reminded me that the resources I utilized to get me out of my abusive relationship are not well known and that even the worst parts of such a relationship can easily be seen as normal if that’s what you’re used to.

I was a hard-working single mother who often rode the poverty line like it was an angry bull. Help from my family came with consequences that only made things worse so I learned early that I had to do it all on my own.

Except, I didn’t.

I received help from strangers and friends alike. My friends kept me going when I wanted to give up and helped me with things like food and transportation. I also had a neighbor who helped me get in touch with a group that helped women who were dealing with domestic violence. Not only did they help me leave, they connected me with resources that helped get me on my feet.

I felt a lot of shame in those early years. I didn’t want to be a burden to anyone and I thought that I was supposed to be able to do everything on my own. I couldn’t have been more wrong! My friends and I? We lifted each other up through the years, and I have been able to help them in ways I didn’t realize I could. Those resources provided to me by my community? They helped me to become more independent so I had a strong foundation upon which to build a life for my little family.

I can vividly remember my ex scoffing at me for using a butterknife in place of a screwdriver. It was strange to me then but I understand it a little more now. If you don’t have to struggle, financially or otherwise, there is no need for you to find creative ways to do what needs to be done.

I see this manifest in the same way with those who have not yet figured out how important mindset is. If you believe you’re not capable of making something happen, you’re not looking for solutions. You have made sure to validate that limited belief.

You might see this lack of resourcefulness show up in your own life by thinking you can’t do something until you have the right tool or the perfect conditions.

Sometimes we need to work with what we have.

The next time you find yourself unable to do something because you don’t have what you need to do it, ask yourself if there is something else that might at least help you to get started. Get it started and refine it as more becomes available to you. An imperfect beginning is better than not beginning at all.

If there’s one thing I’ve learned in this life, it’s that everything from business to making dinner with scraps, everything has a workaround or a creative solution if you look for it.

💙 Trish

What I’m Up To

Last week I actually spent most evenings playing video games. I only play once or twice a year and I’ve been playing on the same PS3 for close to 15 years. I can’t believe it still works! All its ports are loose or dead and my controller died last week so I decided to check out the gaming app on my TV which allowed me to easily connect my nephew’s X-Box controller. I was super excited to see that I could play Assassin’s Creed on there! Needless to say, I’ll be spending much of my downtime gaming for a little while 🙂

I also got some new yarn and learned a new crochet stitch to make a shawl. I started making this the other night:

What I’ve Written this Past Week

All the links are free, of course 🙂

What I’m Reading

Still listening to these audiobooks ⬇️

I’ve been going back and forth with listening to The Wolves of Calla, the 5th book of Stephen King’s Dark Tower series, and The Talisman, a book written by both King and Peter Straub.

I’m also still reading Daughter of Fire by Sofia Robleda. It’s such a good book but I’m an incredibly slow reader these days! It’s historical fiction set in the aftermath of the Spanish invasion of South America.

What I’m Watching

I’ve added IMDB links so you can check them out 🙂

HBO/Max has all the original Nightmare on Elm Street movies so I’ve been watching them.

MGM+ gave me a deal for less than $18.00 for 6 months and they just began season 3 of From which I LOVE! This show is about a town that people get trapped in. If you liked The Walking Deadthen I’m sure you’ll love this one!

I still have Prime trials to give out, specifically a 6-month trial for students which ends on 10/31/24, details are under the “Free Stuff” heading 🙂

Free Stuff

Amazon free trials:

  • 6 months of free Amazon Prime for college students or for those between the ages of 18-24 (expires 10/31/24).
