Today’s Message From the Universe reminds us that aligning with what we want will bring better results than chasing.

Love, money, career, experiences – it’s natural for us to chase these things. We work hard, plan, and analyze, always trying to figure out how to get what we want and how we can do better when our efforts don’t seem to be paying off.

We do need to do these things, but something’s missing – alignment!

We hear the word all the time and know what it means, in general, but I think it can be easy to miss the point, or not quite know how to align with what we want and need. There are a few catch-phrases that, I feel, capture it perfectly, though:

“Dress for the job you want.”
”Fake it till you make it.”
”Be the change you want to see in the world.”

I’m not talking about pretending to be someone you’re not, but embodying the person you already are beneath the stories you tell yourself about who you are.

Your fears and insecurities, your beliefs about yourself and the world around you, these are not facts – just stories. Sometimes there’s a seed of truth, but those seeds will respond to the environment they are grown in. Give them harsh conditions and, if they grow at all, they will grow to survive and reflect those conditions.

Survival is good, but what we need to survive is different from what we need to thrive!

Everything you want and need has one thing in common – you. A successful job interview, a first date, marketing, and even deciding to start your own business, these things need your belief in self, your confidence, to bring the best results.

Sure, you can still get a job or lover, etc., without that confidence, but chances are lower, and quality will likely be questionable. If you don’t believe in yourself, you’re not giving anybody else reason to believe. You may even say and do all the right things, but your body language may betray you!

Ok, so how do you gain that confidence?

It’s simple – but not quick or easy. Shocking, I know! 😂😂😂

People talk about such things as affirmations being some magical fix to our insecurities, and frankly, it sounds like bullshit. However, there’s real science behind it! The more we tell ourselves something and repeat new actions and behaviors, the less convincing our brains need to adopt them as something real and lasting.

Saying and doing something new, with consistency, literally changes your brain. A single big event can also have the same effect. If you’d like to learn more about it, you can start with this article from the Cleveland Clinic.

Unfortunately, our brain’s amazing capability to rewire itself can work against us as well. This is why trauma can make us live in fear and self-loathing for years, even an entire lifetime. It creates the beliefs, behaviors, and patterns that serve us well while we endure hardship, but leaves us lacking when faced with the good things in life.

You have to retrain your brain!

The good news is, just knowing this about your brain is a huge step towards retraining, and learning to catch your negative thoughts and behaviors is an even bigger step! When you catch yourself in one of those thoughts or behaviors, you can redirect your focus to something healthier.

It helps to anticipate the unhealthy stuff and their triggers ahead of time so you can create a go-to thought or behavior at the ready. This makes it easier to refocus. It becomes even easier, and eventually unnecessary, with time and practice.

Your homework:

  1. Break out that pen and paper! You can do this digitally, but writing things down manually assists with memory, understanding, and creativity because it engages your brain in a different way.
  2. Create two columns and fill them – one for the unhealthy thoughts and actions, and one for their potential replacements. This is something that is best done on a somewhat regular basis, as we are always changing, growing, and experiencing new things.
  3. Continue life with your new tools and watch yourself bloom!
