Fiction

The Dark Tower series by Stephen King, dark fantasy

This is my all-time favorite book series! It may become a TV series on Amazon Prime and there is talk that King may be adding another book to the set!

“Set in a world of ominous landscape and macabre menace, The Dark Tower series features one of Stephen King’s most powerful creations—The Gunslinger—a haunting figure who embodies the qualities of the lone hero through the ages, from ancient myth to frontier Western legend. As Roland crosses a desert of damnation in a treacherous world that is a twisted image of our own, he moves ever closer to the Dark Tower of his dreams—and nightmares.”

The Sword of Shannara Trilogy by Terry Brooks, fantasy

I read this when I was in my 20s and wanted to read it again from my current perspective. It’s a fantasy that is much like The Hobbit and LOTR books but with its own wonderful characters and storyline. There are a zillion books in this series 🙂

“The Sword of the Shannara follows Shea Ohmsford, a half-elfin who lives in a peaceful land. One day Allanon, a stranger tells Shea that he is the heir of Shannara and the only one who can defeat the Warlock Lord with a powerful sword. Along the way, Shea meets new friends as he goes on his journey to find the sword.”

“Daughter of Fire” by Sofia Robleda, historical fiction

I’m only a couple of chapters in on this one but I’m loving it!

“For a young woman coming of age in sixteenth-century Guatemala, safeguarding her people’s legacy is a dangerous pursuit in a mystical, empowering, and richly imagined historical novel.

Catalina Cerrato is raised by her widowed father, Don Alonso, in 1551 Guatemala, scarcely thirty years since the Spanish invasion. A ruling member of the oppressive Spanish hierarchy, Don Alonso holds sway over the newly relegated lower class of Indigenous communities. Fiercely independent, Catalina struggles to honor her father and her late mother, a Maya noblewoman to whom Catalina made a vow that only she can preserve the lost sacred text of the Popol Vuh, the treasured and now forbidden history of the K’iche people…”

“The Talisman” by Stephen King and Peter Straub, fantasy

I don’t even know how many times I’ve read this book and its sequel! Nobody makes you fall in love with their characters like King 💙

“Two of the world’s bestselling authors have combined their unique talents in an unforgettable epic of fantasy, adventure, odyssey – and spine-tingling terror.

You are about to take a journey… a terrifying trip across America where young Jack Sawyer is searching for the Talisman, the only thing that can save his dying mother. His quest takes him into the menacing Territories where violence, surprise and the titanic struggle between good and evil reach across a mythic landscape… a journey into the dark heart of horror.”

Black House by Stephen King and Peter Straub (Sequal to The Talisman), fantasy

“Twenty years ago, a boy named Jack Sawyer traveled to a parallel universe called the Territories to save his mother and her “Twinner” from an agonizing death that would have brought cataclysm to the other world. Now Jack is a retired Los Angeles homicide detective living in the nearly nonexistent hamlet of Tamarack, Wisconsin. He has no recollection of his adventures in the Territories, and he was compelled to leave the police force when a happenstance event threatened to awaken those long suppressed and dangerous memories.

When a series of gruesome murders occur in western Wisconsin that are reminiscent of those committed several decades earlier, Jack’s buddy, the local chief of police, begs Jack to help find the killer. But are these new killings merely the work of a disturbed individual, or has a mysterious and malignant force been unleashed in this quiet town? What causes Jack’s inexplicable waking dreams – if that is what they are – of robins’ eggs and red feathers? As these cryptic messages becomes impossible to ignore, Jack is drawn back to the Territories and to his own hidden past.”

“Fairy Tale” by Stephen King

“Master storyteller Stephen King goes into the deepest well of his imagination in this #1 New York Times bestselling and spellbinding novel about a young man who inherits the keys to a parallel world where good and evil are at war, and the stakes could not be higher—for that world or ours.”

“The Amie Series” by Laurie Perez

I’ve only just cracked this one open but I have dying to read these! Laurie is one of my favorite writers on Medium 🙂

“This cocoon you’ve been traveling in is meant to rip apart.

“Strangely euphoric.” “A book that you think about, long after you’ve read it!” “Unforgettable.” THE AMIE SERIES EMBRACES BIG QUESTIONS WITH EXPANSIVE SCOPE AND FOCUSED INTIMACY. IT BEGINS IN THE LOOK.

You have a body. A life forms around it. Consciously or obliviously, you experience yourself in structures held in place by myths your active presence here creates.
In the context of a room, a neighborhood, a city block, the spinning planet, a galaxy uncharted: you seem quite small and inconsequential in your fleshy vehicle.
This is the deception you’ve agreed to—a willful forgetting keeps you safely tucked into a pocket of existence your brain can functionally fathom.
