I’ve Missed Almost All My Goals since 2020
Failures filled with wins, Nonya’s Nonsense #17
Hello beautiful souls!!
Are you ready to welcome a new year? These past few years have been quite difficult for me and I’ve missed many of my goals by a mile. I’ve come to realize that many failures are not failures at all, and I hope to help you find all the wins in your own misses.
I wish you a new year filled with all the things that fill your cup!

I’ve Missed Almost All My Goals since 2020
Failures filled with wins
These past few years have been a lesson in just how little control I have over many areas of my life.
A little background information
I began working at 14. Decades of hard work and ignoring health issues caught up with me in 2019. I was 44 and unemployable. I couldn’t even get hired, let alone maintain a full or even part-time position, even in an office.
I am grateful, every day, for a good friend and her family that opened their home to me. They gave me a place to heal, physically, mentally, and spiritually…a place that helped me get out of survival mode.
I was able to have surgery and find a primary physician who helped me untangle and heal many health issues. I started Half-Cracked Guru and my other side hustles throughout the years, all carefully chosen to help me work with and around my limitations.
My intention was to only stay with my friend for a few months but I am still here and still struggling to get on my feet. Becoming independent once again has been my biggest goal since then and remains my top goal today.
My goals and progress over the past 5 years
I created financial goals for a few years but, even with modest targets, I kept missing them by huge margins. I’ve still got targets in mind but my goals now center around the things I can do that could help get me there.
I’ve researched and experimented a lot, making sure to give anything new plenty of time to gain momentum and show results. Every year, I think that I’ve finally landed on something that will help me reach my goal of independence and every December I find myself feeling as if I’d made no headway at all.
Here’s the thing though, if I look back, I can see the growth of my projects even though the financials are still lacking. Logically, I know that it can take years to become profitable and my limitations make everything take that much longer.
Some of 2024’s misses that were actual wins
There is much that I will keep to myself but here are a few that I’ve found helpful in finding a little perspective. I hope they might help you to do the same.
1. Create a daily writing habit
I did ok with this one for about a month then fell off completely. However, I found Medium about a month later and that immediately leveled up my writing habits.
I still don’t write every day and no longer feel I need to do so. I write a few times a week and believe the quality of my writing has also improved.
2. Learn how to type the right way and hit 80 wpm
My typing was always more than adequate for any of my jobs but I applied for a job that required 60 wpm (words per minute) early in the year.
My fingers would fly on a number pad but I was only at about 35 wpm on the rest of the keyboard. I never learned how to type the correct way and was always looking at the keyboard so I started taking lessons on typing.com about halfway through the year.
I completed my lessons early in the fall and have been practicing for 20 minutes almost every day since. I am now comfortably typing at about 45 wpm without looking at the keyboard and hitting at least 50 wpm half the time.
My fingers now fly over the keyboard with almost as much speed as the number pad and practice has become a fun way to begin my work day!
3. Create at least one YouTube video per month
This one was particularly hard for me, especially since it’s almost certain it will help my business grow. I bought a tripod and a good microphone, I was determined to make it happen!
Well, I didn’t. BUT, I learned how much time and energy was needed to do it, learned how to edit video, and even got more comfortable with being on camera. There was a lot of internal stuff I had to get past as well.
So no, I didn’t put anything out with the exception of an intro, but this failure contained many big wins for me!
4. Finish a big project I’ve been working on
I can’t give you details on this one but this is still the highest priority on my list. What I can tell you is that this project was meant for a specific platform and I became unsure of whether or not it was the right platform for my work.
I checked out and learned all about a similar platform, and even became a certified consultant. Both have their strong points and limitations so I am still very much in the research and development stage.
5. Lose weight
Specifically, I wanted to get under 200 lbs. I have been trying and failing to meet this goal for years. I did finally meet this goal in 2024 but I don’t really get the credit for it because it was due to my doctor prescribing me Ozempic.
What I did learn was that my issue went far beyond things like willpower and discipline. I had health issues that already made this a losing battle.
I was then prescribed a medication that made me gain and continue to gain weight no matter what I did. This medication was a miracle for me! It not only kept my depression and anxiety in check, it almost completely eradicated the nerve pain that held me hostage for so many years.
I am down over 50 lbs now and will reach my ideal weight in another 30 lbs! My fault or not, I’m ecstatic with the results 🙂
6. Applied for help
I applied for disability early in 2021 and was denied. I didn’t appeal it or anything, just kept my efforts focused on trying to grow my hustles.
Now that I have had several years with my doctors here, I decided I should try again and did so in September. The state I live in provides a little help for those waiting on approval for disability and I was previously denied for that as well. However, just last month I was granted approval and it’s such a relief!
It’s not much but it’s consistent and will allow me to budget and save, something I’ve been struggling with since my health took a nosedive. Hopefully, my new application for disability will be approved, if not, then I will appeal this time because I know it can take many tries to get that approval.
Wrapping up
These past few years have taught me so much about myself, especially the need to be patient and kind to myself as I have always done with others. I’ve learned to view my goals as guidelines, allowing for the flexibility necessary to adapt to my situation and the curveballs life throws at all of us from time to time.
If you’re beating yourself up about missing goals, I encourage you to look back a few years with the intention of finding and celebrating your progress in all areas of your life.
We’re not machines and those overnight successes we admire in others are never overnight. Not only did they put a lot of time and effort into their thing, they have different advantages and limitations than you. We’ve all got our own mix of both.
My wish for you in the coming year is that you will be kind to yourself, seek to achieve and maintain balance in your life, and learn to find things that make you smile even, and especially, during difficult times. I will be doing the same 💙

What I’m reading
I am still listening to book 7 of The Dark Tower series and Fairy Tale, both by Stephen King
Dark Tower, Book 7 This is my all-time favorite set of books 💙
“Set in a world of ominous landscape and macabre menace, The Dark Tower series features one of Stephen King’s most powerful creations—The Gunslinger—a haunting figure who embodies the qualities of the lone hero through the ages, from ancient myth to frontier Western legend. As Roland crosses a desert of damnation in a treacherous world that is a twisted image of our own, he moves ever closer to the Dark Tower of his dreams—and nightmares.”
Fairy Tale
“Master storyteller Stephen King goes into the deepest well of his imagination in this #1 New York Times bestselling and spellbinding novel about a young man who inherits the keys to a parallel world where good and evil are at war, and the stakes could not be higher—for that world or ours.”

What I’m watching
Link is from IMBD
Shameless
I restarted watching this on Showtime but Netflix has the entire series as well. I have no idea how many times I’ve seen the whole series but it’s always just as awesome as the first time around! It’s a dramedy about a dysfunctional family and one of my all-time favorites! I’m watching the American version but the English version is good too!
What I’m listening to
Calvin Harris – Feels (Official Video) ft. Pharrell Williams, Katy Perry, Big Sean
I almost forgot about this one! It never fails to make me smile 🙂
bbno$ & Rich Brian – edamame (Official Video)
bbno$’s music isn’t really my thing but I love this one!
Happy New Year! May your 2025 be filled with all the things that fill your cup!
