Daily Card for 3/6/20 – Transparency

Published by Trish Nonya on

There are things you hide from others and you have every right to keep them to yourself. However, consider what it is and who you’re hiding it from.

You undoubtedly have very good reasons for keeping that part of you away from harsh judgements and possible consequences. Not everybody deserves to know this part of you but this isn’t for them, this is for you.

Hiding sucks, pretending to be something you’re not will do nothing but drain and discourage you, and those important people in your life, they know you’re lying. They will make up their own stories to try to understand what’s going on with you and these stories are rarely better than the real thing.

You may have considered all the awful things that might happen if you told your story, but have you considered that opening up might put you in a position receive understanding and support that you will not otherwise?

People you love may have written you off because they’ve assumed the worst and feel helpless. If they knew what the real story was they could accept what is and process accordingly instead of living in uncertainty.

If being transparent threatens your safety then you should do everything you can to find others who have walked in your shoes. They will have perspectives, tools, and resources that may be helpful to you.

If you’re worried about people turning their back on you then you should know it will happen anyway. Those aren’t your people no matter how much you want them to be.

When we truly care for our friends and family we accept the positive and negative about them and offer a helping hand or a shoulder to cry on, not ultimatums and threats unless you are a threat to them. A good friend might tell you you’re being an asshole but they will stand with you.

Imagine the freedom that comes with not having to figure out how to explain yourself without holding back that vital information and stories begging to be told.

Song of the Day may be offensive to some, so listen with discretion.
